Madeira, Portugal, is quickly gaining a reputation as one of Europe’s premier mountain biking destinations. Nestled off the coast of Morocco, this island offers a mind-blowing mix of technical descents, high-speed flow trails, and breathtaking scenery. We set off on a journey—5,200 miles from home—to experience firsthand what makes Madeira such a sought-after MTB spot.
Arriving in Madeira
Reaching Madeira was an adventure in itself, but after a long journey, some well-earned local pastries, and getting our bikes dialed in, we were ready to hit the dirt. What awaited us? An unforgettable mix of fast and flowy trails, rugged technical sections, and the kind of riding that tests both your skills and endurance.
Diving into the Trails: The Ride Experience
From day one, Madeira delivered. The first descent gave us 16 miles of non-stop, adrenaline-pumping downhill. The terrain kept us on our toes, from loamy corners to fast, rocky sections demanding precision and control.

Day Two: Technical Terrain and Challenging Descents
With fresh brake pads installed (a must in Madeira’s terrain), we kicked off the day on a blue-rated trail called Avalanche. This flowy yet demanding track set the stage for what was to come—steep rock gardens, tight technical switchbacks, and some of the best dirt conditions we’ve ever experienced.
Re-riding trails allowed us to push harder, but with that confidence came the risk of over-committing. The added challenge of keeping up with seasoned riders, including ex-pro racers, kept the energy high. But as we quickly learned, pacing yourself is key in Madeira—these descents are long and physically demanding.
The Red Line and Beyond
One of the most thrilling trails we tackled was the Red Line—an advanced track featuring gap jumps, rooty sections, and some serious high-speed action. The combination of misty conditions and ridge-line exposure made for a surreal riding experience. The island’s famed levadas, centuries-old irrigation channels, wove through sections of the ride, adding a unique twist to the trails.
Tackling the Rock Gardens
Madeira is home to some of the chunkiest trails we’ve ever ridden. A black diamond trail packed with non-stop rock gardens tested our skills and endurance. With every section, we had to adjust our technique—picking the best lines, managing fatigue, and knowing when to let off the brakes and trust our suspension.

Trail Variety: Madeira’s Unique MTB Appeal
The island’s diversity in terrain is truly unmatched. One moment, you’re navigating high-alpine rock gardens; the next, you’re flowing through sculpted berms and jumps that feel like a natural rollercoaster. And just when you think you’ve seen it all, a fast, dusty section suddenly transitions into loamy rainforest dirt. Every ride feels like a new adventure.
