SUPER rowdy mountain biking the Grouse trail on Buffalo Pass outside of Steamboat Colorado.
This might have been the hardest trail we rode all year, and that is saying a LOT!!
Mountain biking the Grouse trail will challenge your technical downhill riding in ways that will either make you a lot better, or just scare the you know what out of you.
About the Grouse trail
We rode from our campsite up the road to the trailhead, which isn’t super clear on the left side of the road. Checkout our Trailforks info to make sure you don’t miss it.
Grouse starts off chunky from the start! Get ready for some pedal bashing, hard riding, and picking good lines.
There are a lot of lines on the trail that deserve a good look before diving into. Take your time and have a look if you aren’t sure about it.
Most of the tough upper lines have hard and intermediate lines to choose from, but there are a few that don’t give you an easier choice.
The harder lines are mostly very rocky and steep, but once you get towards the end you’ll find a loose dirt section that requires a lot of brake control. Actually the only section I walked was the loose dirt section. It was spicy on a side hill.
Shuttling
This would be a great trail to shuttle with some friends. Just be ready for a pretty bumpy dirt road that I would want to have high clearance for.
The climb back up on Flash of Gold isn’t bad, but it feels pretty long after the ride down. So my recommendation would be to shuttle a few laps unless you are looking for some fitness gains ;-).
