Stone King Day 1 didn’t ease us in — it made its point immediately.
This was the start of a 6-day alpine mountain biking adventure through the French and Italian Alps, part of the legendary Stone King Rally. We knew it would be demanding. We expected long days and tired legs. What surprised us was just how quickly Day 1 delivered both challenge and reward at the same time.
By the end of the day, it was clear: this wasn’t just another mountain bike trip.
What Is Stone King?
Stone King is a multi-day alpine enduro experience that traverses remote terrain across the French Alps and the Italian Alps.
There are no shuttles.
No lift access.
No easy days.
Every descent is earned through long climbs, hike-a-bike sections, and constant navigation decisions. It’s part endurance event, part adventure, and part problem-solving exercise — all set in some of the most dramatic mountain scenery we’ve ever ridden.
Day 1 by the Numbers
Stone King Day 1 set the bar high right out of the gate:
- Distance: 38.3 miles
- Climbing: ~4,300 feet
- Descending: ~14,500 feet
That’s a full, legitimate alpine day — and it was only the beginning of the week.

The Riding: Raw Alpine Terrain
Day 1 delivered a little bit of everything the Alps are known for:
- Freeze-thaw conditions at elevation
- Mud mixed with sharp, unforgiving rock
- Long hike-a-bike sections
- Narrow traverses and exposed ridgelines
- Fast, technical descents that demanded focus
These aren’t manicured trails. Many feel like they’ve existed forever, etched into the mountainside long before mountain bikes were even a thing. The terrain constantly changes, and mistakes are costly — but when the trail opens up, the riding is absolutely incredible.
Navigation Is Half the Battle
One of the biggest adjustments on Day 1 was realizing just how much navigation matters at Stone King.
You’re constantly making decisions — which ridge to follow, which trail drops where, and how much effort you can afford to spend before the next descent. Make a wrong call, and the day gets longer fast.
It’s mentally engaging in a way that few riding trips are.
When Day 1 Finally Clicked
Somewhere in the middle of the day — after another long hike-a-bike and yet another descent that seemed to go on forever — it clicked.
This wasn’t about racing.
It wasn’t about chasing segments.
It was about being fully present in a place that feels genuinely wild, riding trails that demand respect, patience, and commitment. That realization changed how the rest of the day felt.
Day 1 stopped being intimidating and started being special.

How We Felt at the Finish
By the time we rolled into the finish late in the evening, we were tired, dirty, and feeling every mile of the day.
But we also felt something important: confidence.
If Day 1 was this hard — and this good — then the rest of Stone King was going to be an unforgettable experience.

Final Thoughts on Stone King Day 1
Stone King Day 1 was better than we imagined — not because it was easy, but because it demanded something from us and rewarded that effort with riding we’ll never forget.
It set the tone for the week in the most honest way possible.
And somehow… this was only Day 1.
