If you’ve been running TRP brakes for a while, you already know why so many enduro riders swear by the way they feel on steep, rough terrain. I’ve spent a huge amount of time on the TRP DHR EVOs, and recently I’ve been testing TRP’s newest version — the EVO Pros — to see if these updates are worth your hard-earned money.
After riding both systems back-to-back on some of the steepest, sketchiest, and fastest trails we’ve found across Europe and the PNW… I’ve got opinions. Clear ones.
This comparison is strictly about the differences — not a long-term review of the EVO Pros (that’s coming soon).
Let’s break it down.
🔧 What’s Actually Different Between DHR EVO and EVO Pro?
From a distance, these brakes look incredibly similar — and honestly, TRP didn’t reinvent the system here. They refined it. The new EVO Pro lever is the star of the show, and the big question is whether that refinement matters for you.
Here’s the full breakdown.

1. Lever Shape & Feel — The EVO Pro Gets a Real Upgrade
The biggest, most noticeable change is the EVO Pro lever. TRP tightened things up here.
On trail, the Pro lever feels more solid, more premium, and more confidence-inspiring when you’re bouncing down something blown-out and fast.
Is the old DHR EVO lever bad?
Nope — not at all. It’s still one of my favorite levers on the market.
But the EVO Pro lever is better, and you feel it almost immediately.
2. Tool-Free Pad Adjust — Legitimately Useful
This is the feature that surprised me the most.
The tool-free pad adjust on the EVO Pro is WAY more useful in the real world than I expected. If you’re picky about lever throw or like to fine-tune brake feel depending on the terrain (steeps vs flow), you’ll appreciate this adjustment more than you think.
On the DHR EVO, you can get similar results — but it takes tools and more fiddling.
On the EVO Pro?
Literally twist it with your fingers and go.
Simple, fast, and surprisingly handy.
3. Power & Modulation — Basically Identical
This is the part that matters for most riders:
Power and modulation feel almost exactly the same between the DHR EVO and EVO Pro.
Both brakes offer:
- Big, confident power
- Smooth modulation
- Predictable lever feel
- No sudden “on/off” bite like some other brakes
If you’re switching brakes for performance, not features, then both systems are basically tied.
4. Installation & Setup — No Real Difference
Mounting, hose length, rotor options, and setup procedures are essentially the same.
If you’ve already installed TRP brakes before, the EVO Pros won’t give you any surprises.

💰 So… Should You Upgrade?
Here’s the honest answer:
If you already own DHR EVOs:
You do not need to upgrade.
They are still amazing brakes with fantastic power and modulation. You won’t suddenly ride faster because you switch to the EVO Pros.
If your lever feel is your biggest priority:
The EVO Pro lever is worth it.
It’s truly nicer, and the tool-free pad adjust is icing on the cake.
If you’re choosing between buying new brakes:
I’d go EVO Pro.
Not because they’re massively better — but because the lever is nicer and the user experience is smoother.
If the budget is tight:
Stick with DHR EVO.
You’re not missing out on significant performance.
⭐ Final Verdict
The TRP EVO Pros are a refined, more user-friendly version of the DHR EVOs — but they’re not a must-have upgrade. If you already own DHR EVOs and love them, keep your money and keep riding.
If you’re buying new brakes today and want the best TRP has to offer?
Grab the EVO Pros for the improved lever alone.
