By Day 5 of the Stone King, everything starts to feel different.
The excitement is still there. The views are still unreal. The trails are still some of the best weโve ever ridden.
But your body knows exactly how many days youโve been out here.
Every climb takes a little more out of you.
Every descent requires a little more focus.
And every mistake feels like it could cost a lot more.

The Kind of Riding That Wears You Down
Stone King isnโt just about riding.
Itโs ridingโฆ pushingโฆ and carrying your bike through some of the most rugged terrain in the French and Italian Alps.
Over the course of this route, you cover more than:
- 168 miles
- 21,000 feet of climbing
- 73,000 feet of descending
And by Day 5, youโre feeling every bit of it.
The trails donโt get easier.
If anything, they demand more.
Steep, narrow lines.
Loose terrain.
Exposure that makes you think twice before committing.
Itโs the kind of riding where thereโs very little room for error.

When Things Start to Go Sideways
At first, itโs subtle.
A brake lever that doesnโt feel quite right.
A little less bite than you expect.
The kind of thing you noticeโฆ but hope isnโt a big deal.
But it doesnโt take long before it becomes very clear:
Something is wrong.
And not just โannoying mechanicalโ wrong.
Serious problem, in a bad place, wrong.
No Brakes, Miles From Help
At some point, the reality hits.
The brake isnโt working the way it should.
And on trails like these, thatโs not something you can ignore.
Youโre miles away from any road.
Miles away from help.
And surrounded by terrain that doesnโt give you second chances.
What should have been one of the most fun days of the trip instantly shifts.
Now itโs not about riding fast.
Itโs not even about riding well.
Itโs about making it down safely.

Walking What You Should Be Riding
Thereโs a moment that sticks with you.
Standing at the top of a section that you know you could ride.
On any other day, you wouldnโt even think twice about it.
But now?
Youโre looking at the line, thinking about the consequences, and making a different decision.
Walking.
Switchback after switchback.
Steep, exposed terrain.
Knowing exactly what youโre missing out onโฆ and why.
Itโs frustrating.
Itโs disappointing.
And in the moment, it just sucks.
The Mental Side of a Day Like This
This is the part people donโt always see.
Trips like the Stone King are incredible.
But theyโre also unpredictable.
You can do everything rightโฆ and still end up dealing with something like this.
And when it happens, it becomes a mental game.
Stay calm.
Make good decisions.
Donโt let frustration take over.
Because out here, frustration can lead to mistakes.
And mistakes are the last thing you can afford.
Soโฆ Is It Still Worth It?
Even on a day like this, itโs hard to ignore where you are.
Riding through the Alps.
Moving between remote villages.
Experiencing terrain that most people will never see.
Itโs not always perfect.
Itโs not always fun.
But itโs real.
And thatโs a big part of what makes the Stone King so special.
